An experimental study of the effect of glycerol on the rat infraorbital nerve

Abstract
We investigate the effects of glycerol to the peripheral nerve tissue that produces a neurolytic activities associated with demyelination of nerve fibers, if given in large amounts or injected directly into the retrogasserian ganglion.
Pure glycerol, absolute alcohol, 50% dextrose in water and normal saline were injected into the infraorbital canal of 36 rats that divided into 4 groups.
All of subjects were sacrificed at the period of postoperative 1, 2 and 4 weeks and stained with hematoxiline and eosin, toluidine blue for histologic findings.
@ES The obtained results were as follows:
@EN 1. Hypertonic solution (pure glycerol, 50% dextrose in water) revealed the neurolytic activity in nerve fibers such as shrinkage of axons and swelling and fragmentation of myeline.
2. Neurolytic action was most prominent in the group treated with pure glycerol.
3. No signs of regeneration and destruction of nerve fibers were noted in the group treated with absolute alcohol.
4. Normal morphologic findings was recorded in the group treated with normal saline, and showed little degeneration.
